Language and culture


The folk culture of the Jhalakathi region is the genuine feeling of the heart of the people's life here, which has been expressed through folk literature, folk music, folk art and folklore.

Some elements of folklore of Barisal district are presented in brief form:

A. Punthi: Punthi literature has been identified as one of the branches of folk literature. Among the famous statues here are Gunai Bibi, Meraj Gaman of Rasul, Yusuf-Zolekha etc.


B. Proverb: Humor is one of the characteristic features of the residents of Barisal region. And because of this feature, they often express their empirical knowledge satirically through proverbs. Some of these proverbs used in Barisal region are:

Pola is broken bone,

In the wasteland,

No place in the court,

Come home.


C. Simisya/Sholak: Riddles have been popular as brain games since ancient times. All over the rural areas of Barisal this riddle is called Simisya or Sholak. Here are a few Sholaks with answers:

One hand is the tree, five (hands) hold the fruit.

A brief introduction to the various branches of folk music in which this region is rich is given:

A. Sari: Music that is usually found together in a row is called a Sari song. The song that the sailors sing in tune with the rhythmic sound of the boats during boating is known as sari song in Barisal region.


B. Jari: Jari song is very prevalent and popular in greater Barisal like other parts of the country. Basically the Muslim community of this region is associated with this song. Jari songs are performed by a main singer and some of his collaborators.


C. Bhatiali: Bhatiali song is widely known as the song of Bhatia region. And that's why this song is popular in Barisal region. Bhatiali is the song to remove the loneliness of the boatman on the lonely river.


D. Jatra: Since ancient times, a special form of acting called Jatrapala has been practiced in this region. Regionally itinerant yatrapalas or singing troupes have been representing folk culture in the Barisal region for ages.


E. Haila/Saila: Haila is widely known as one of the genres of folk music. Haila is primarily festival-oriented music. Bullying is prevalent among both Hindu and Muslim communities in the region.


F. Geet of Ghajn: Festival of Ghajn Hindu community. Ghazan songs are composed around various deities. According to some, Gajan is actually the monsoon festival of primitive society. The song that is performed in Gajan festival is called Gajan Geet.


G. Rayani: Mansadevi's epic music based on folk tales is primarily known as Rayani. Rayani is performed on the last seven days of Shravan month when Mansa Puja is performed.
